Hogs in town....

Last Thursday I was making the daily trek home down Space Center Blvd behind Ellington when something caught my eye on the right. I made a u-turn in front of the Sonny Carter Training Facility and went back down far enough to get another look at what I had seen. Sure enough, as I passed the drainage canal and looked down, there were a dozen or so black hogs rooting around and feeding. I've seen deer on Ellington but never hogs before. They may have found the perfect place as no one will be hunting them in there. I just wonder how long before we have hogs in the neighborhoods as this is less than 3/4 mile from my house. Houston, we have a problem!

There's only 2 places in Texas as far as hogs are concerned- Where they are and where they're going to be soon.

Anytime you see hogs in Harris County you can call the Harris County Livestock Division and give them the location. They will then call in their hog removal group to help with the situation.

Yep, I live in the neighborhood behind that ditch. The hogs got in the school yard a couple of months and tore the place up. This has been an on going problem in the neighborhood.

Could be there tonight. You've got deer, hogs, coyotes, bobcats in that area and there was even a mountain that came through that area several years ago.

Blocks of remaining wildlife habitat and travel corridors continue to be squeezed down by residential and commercial development so where does that leave wildlife?

The only humorous part is people who call me wanting to know how come wildlife is showing up in their yards and what can I do about it. I have to explain that where these folks are now living used to be home to the wildlife and they are trying to cope with it as best they know how.

We have been living behind Ellington and Friendswood Development Properties ,since 1974 and have seen deer, hogs, coyotes, bobcats,a few phesant when we first moved there, praire chicken, and on the end of the woods near Red Bluff, have seen wild turkeys...the animals have learned that they are protected[to a degree] out there and have developed a good population..spend a few hours out side in the early fall ,early morning and count the rifle shots you hear...there are poachers out there regularly.
